Deep-penetrating rust stabiliser with a flexible protective coating. Unlike conventional rust converters, Owatrol Oil does not chemically convert rust—it penetrates deep into the metal’s pores and microcracks, displacing moisture and air before stabilising the surface. Owatrol Oil dries completely within 48 hours of application, leaving a surface that can be painted over. Drying time: 12–48 hours. Temperature resistance: up to +175°C. Coverage: approximately... OWATROL® Rust Stabiliser 300ml Spray – Multifunctional Rust Stabiliser and Paint Conditioner for Oil-Based Coatings

OWATROL® OIL is a highly penetrating, air-drying alkyd oil formulated to prevent rust, improve paint adhesion, and provide long-lasting protection against the elements. It is suitable both as a standalone protective coating and as an additive to oil- and alkyd-based paints, varnishes, and stains.

Its unique formula displaces air and moisture in rust, creating a stable, non-flaking surface that can be safely painted over. OWATROL® OIL also saturates dry, porous wood surfaces with oil, preventing paint from peeling and improving the finish on wood.

Product applications

OWATROL® OIL is suitable for a variety of materials and surfaces:

  • Metal (rusty or new): steel structures, pipes, railings, equipment, trailers, tanks
  • Wood: dry, damaged, porous surfaces, both horizontal and vertical
  • Interior and exterior applications

Key features and benefits

  • Can be applied directly to rust without the need to clean the metal back to bare metal
  • Penetrates deeply into the rust layer, displacing moisture and stopping corrosion
  • Forms a stable layer that provides excellent paint adhesion
  • Compatible with oil- and alkyd-based coatings, including urethane alkyd paints
  • Improves paint flow, extends the open time, and enhances adhesion in challenging conditions
  • Fills wood pores with oil, preventing paint from peeling and providing long-lasting adhesion
  • Withstands temperatures up to 175°C once fully dry

Application on metal surfaces

  • Rusty metal: Apply wet-on-wet until the surface becomes uniformly glossy. This indicates full saturation. After the first application, check for loose rust flakes; these can be carefully removed and the area touched up with OWATROL® OIL.
  • New metal: OWATROL® OIL can be used as a primer—one part OWATROL® OIL to three parts alkyd primer, or apply one thin coat undiluted. Once dry, the surface can be painted with paint mixed with OWATROL® OIL.

Application on wood

  • Wood in good condition: Prime with a mixture of OWATROL® OIL and paint primer, then apply paint mixed with OWATROL® OIL (usually 5–20% of the paint volume).
  • Damaged or porous wood: Apply several coats wet-on-wet without allowing drying time between coats. Once the wood no longer absorbs the product, wipe off any excess oil and allow it to dry. Continue with a standard paint system, adding OWATROL® OIL.

Paint conditioning The product significantly improves the properties of oil-based paints and varnishes:

  • Extends the working time with a wet edge
  • Prevents paint from sticking, dragging, and setting too quickly
  • Improves paint flow, allowing for a professional finish even in challenging conditions

Recommended mixing ratios with paint

  • Topcoat paint: 5–20% by volume
  • Primers: up to 30%
  • Base coat (first coat): up to 50%. These ratios can be adjusted on site depending on the condition and porosity of the surface.
